This week, Michele Erwin joined LumiData as a Director of National Accounts, adding to LumiData’s expert bench of former Target retail specialists. Prior to accepting her position with LumiData, Michele worked for 13 years as an independent consultant, most recently partnering with Target teams in a category captaincy role. During her time as a consultant, she also performed account management functions, held the titles of National Account Services Director and National Account Manager, and worked with retail clients in inventory and change management.

The National Retail Federation predicts record Valentine’s Day sales this year, estimating that February 14 sales will contribute about $18.9 billion to the economy. When it comes to the gifts purchased, more than half of popular Valentine’s Day purchases are candy, more than a third are flowers and about a fifth are jewelry. The NRF projects that younger people will spend more this year. Those between 25-34 will spend $114.46 each, followed by those between 18-24, who will spend $104.15 each. And men who make over $50,000 a year will each spend a whopping $190.53! 

NRF data indicates that more than two thirds of Valentine's Day givers shop at discount stores or department stores. Retailers are sure to have their shelves stocked with deals for value-conscious shoppers, but are the suppliers sure that the right amount of stock is in the right stores? Having access to store level demographics is key, because when it comes to Valentine’s Day, the right stores are those stores with a younger customer base and those stores located in more affluent neighborhoods.
